The 2024 Smart City Expo and Net Zero City Expo, co-organized by the National Development Council, Taipei Computer Association, and Kaohsiung City Government, opened today (19th) at the Nangang Exhibition Center. Gong Mingxin, Chairman of the National Development Council, emphasized that achieving net zero emissions by 2050 should not be seen solely as an increase in operating costs for businesses. He highlighted that reaching net zero emissions by 2050 presents the best opportunity for corporate transformation and hopes to see more companies join the net zero movement to become new engines of economic growth.

During the opening speech, Secretary-General of the Presidential Office Lin Chia-lung stated that the government is striving to transform Taiwan into a technology island. Taiwan’s ICT industry has developed a diverse range of smart city and net zero city solutions over the past decade, which have been tested in various applications. Taiwan can now promote these solutions globally and collaborate with countries worldwide to create business opportunities.

Gong Mingxin mentioned in his address that achieving net zero emissions by 2050 is a crucial development goal for Taiwan. To reach this goal, the government officially launched a net zero emissions plan this year, based on the government’s 2050 net zero emissions roadmap to comprehensively promote carbon reduction efforts. The collaboration with the Taipei Computer Association to organize the 2050 Net Zero City Expo aims to not only advance Taiwan’s carbon reduction efforts but also foster global cooperation to achieve this challenging goal.

This exhibition, which has been in preparation for half a year since last year, has invited representatives from 46 countries, regions, cities, and enterprises. The computer expo hosted by Taipei is already the second-largest in the world. Following the Smart City Expo, the “Net Zero City Expo” will delve into the challenges and solutions for smart cities and anticipate future scenarios. Gong Mingxin emphasized the importance of anticipating and preparing for 2050 net zero emissions, contributing to societal digital transformation. The forum topics include industry transformation, green finance, and the participation of major carbon trading markets worldwide, such as experts from Germany, Japan, Singapore, and the UK, to discuss relevant issues and contribute to international carbon trading mechanisms.

In addition, the exhibition has invited government departments, research institutions, universities, and enterprises to showcase solutions related to the 12 key strategies for achieving net zero emissions approved by the Executive Yuan. Gong Mingxin stressed that net zero emissions should not be viewed solely as an increase in operating costs for businesses. Instead, it should be seen as the best opportunity for corporate transformation, with the hope that more companies will join the net zero movement to become new drivers of economic growth.

The other co-organizer of the exhibition is the Kaohsiung City Government. Vice Mayor Lin Chin-jung of Kaohsiung City pointed out that Kaohsiung City is a pioneer in smart cities and sincerely invited guests to visit Kaohsiung City Hall. The event specifically welcomes guests from Southbound countries and domestic dignitaries, businesses, technology representatives, and city delegates to explore Kaohsiung and broaden their international perspectives in the southern region. Guests are encouraged to visit Kaohsiung from March 21st to March 23rd to witness the growth of another thriving smart city.
