Industry insiders have revealed that Samsung Electronics in South Korea may face its first-ever strike as labor and management negotiations on wages have broken down, granting the union the legal right to strike.

According to reports from the “Korea Herald,” last month, Samsung’s union and management held the sixth round of salary negotiations but failed to reach a consensus. Subsequently, the union requested arbitration from the Central Labor Commission, and last Thursday marked the third intervention by the Central Labor Commission, yet the parties still could not reach an agreement.

The outcome of the negotiations has empowered the union to obtain the legal right to strike through a member vote. The union has 20,000 members, accounting for 16% of Samsung’s total workforce.

The union plans to conduct a vote starting on Monday for its members to decide whether to initiate a strike. On the same day, the union will also engage in a final round of negotiations with Samsung’s top management.
