Recently, the sky has appeared hazy due to weak winds and poor dispersion in the western part of Taiwan, leading to frequent red alerts for air quality. The Ministry of Environmental Protection has coordinated with Taiwan Power Company to reduce electricity generation by 308 million kilowatt-hours at 5 coal-fired power plants, resulting in a reduction of 177 metric tons of air pollutants. The air quality is expected to improve tonight. The public is advised to use public transportation, reduce outdoor activities, and take necessary precautions.

Last week, Minister of Environmental Protection Hsueh Fu-sheng reported to the Legislative Yuan. During the session, Dr. and Legislator Su Ching-chuan raised concerns about air pollution, highlighting the impact of PM2.5 and PM10 on respiratory and cardiovascular health. The recent poor air quality has been felt not only in Pingtung but also throughout the western region of Taiwan.

The prevailing winds in Taiwan have been from the east to southeast recently. The Ministry of Environmental Protection has taken action since the 14th to address the changing air quality in the western region. Coordination with coal-fired power plants has resulted in a reduction of 308 million kilowatt-hours of electricity and a decrease of approximately 177 metric tons of pollutants from the plants mentioned.

Local governments have initiated response measures since the 15th. Command centers have been established in Chiayi City and County, Tainan, Kaohsiung, and Lienchiang, with response teams set up in Taipei, Taoyuan, Miaoli, Taichung, Yunlin, and Pingtung.

The Ministry of Environmental Protection has compiled response measures taken by local governments, including inspections of 293 factories, notifications for voluntary emission reductions, inspections of open burning areas, food establishments, and construction sites (608 locations), enhanced dust control measures at construction sites, vehicle checks on important roads (12,810 vehicles), and road cleaning near sensitive areas (3,409.9 kilometers).

The Ministry of Environmental Protection reminds the public that the current air quality degradation will continue until tonight before gradually improving. The ministry, along with local governments, will continue to respond to reduce pollution emissions. People are advised to minimize outdoor activities during periods of poor air quality. Air quality is significantly influenced by meteorological conditions, and individuals can download the “Environmental Instant Notification” app to stay informed about air quality in their area.
